If you listened to the IHC podcast this morning, you may remember that in the bit about upcoming movies, both me and Delsyd were less than enthusiastic about Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, mainly because we were skeptical about a) the need for another Bad Lieutenant movie and b) Nicolas Cage. But this bizarre clip has changed my mind. I might just have to go and see this.

Nic Cage isn't at his best playing generic action heroes or comic book superheroes-- he's at his best plaing strange, twisted and quirky characters like Hi from Raising Arizona or Ben Sanderson from Leaving Las Vegas. And if this short clip is any indication, director Warner Herzog apparently threatened severe bodily harm if Cage played the part like he was in Ghost Rider.

This movie isn't a remake of the original Bad Lieutenant starring Harvey Keitel, nor is it a sequel... it's just a different Bad Lieutenant movie. From FilmDrunk's review of the movie:

Ostensibly, the plot revolves around Cage’s investigation of the murder of a family of five Senegalese immigrants, who we meet via a hilariously over-the-top diary left by the child. But that leaves plenty of room in William Finkelstein’s script for Cage to steal drugs from upscale club goers, bang their girlfriends in front of them at gunpoint for fun, threaten old ladies, and shuffle around with a .44 revolver shoved down the front of his pants like Al Bundy’s hand. He will do or say anything, especially if it involves drugs, sex, or gambling, and that’s what makes him so fun. Sometimes he’s your id and sometimes he’s just a prick. You can laugh with or at him.

Yup, you can mark me down as officially now looking forward to this movie, which opens up November 20th. Nic Cage's over the top lieutenant might end up being more watchable than Keitel's over the top coke-smoking, weiner wagging lieutenant from the original. Maybe.
